Stan Norwalk will work for:
- Connect growth and infrastructure needs.
Our future economic development and vitality depends on a strong infrastructure. - Growth cannot outstrip water capacity.
- Transit options are increasingly needed in an era of high cost energy.
- Open space for parks and stream buffers must be protected
- Growth cannot outstrip school capacity
- Phase out placing over 20,000 children in high-cost, temporary facilities.
- Reduce seats in mandatory year-round schools.
- Growth paying for growth.
- Existing residents should not pay the full cost of growth. Incoming residents and businesses must pay their fair share.
- Alternatives to the property tax, including impact fees, are needed to pay for schools and other county infrastructure.
- Closer cooperation between county government and municipalities on growth.
- Muni’s and county governments must work together to manage growth.
- Strengthen
public education. Wake’s public schools spend $30,000 per classroom per
year less than the national average and the gap is growing.
- Competitive
pay and good working conditions to attract the best teachers; more
challenging academic programs; greater efforts to increase high-school
graduation rate and more mentoring of new teachers.
- Protect the environment
- The lakes that supply our water grow increasingly polluted. Our air quality does not meet EPA standards.
- Improve enforcement of existing regulations.
- Say “no” to special interests.
- For example, $20 million for a luxury hotel and millions for a parking garage for an upscale apartment house.
- Genuine fiscal conservatism – put needs ahead of wants. E.g. $28 million for a new administrative headquarters is not a need.
